ABOUT THIS MARCH:
Experienced black activist and former Lesbian Avenger Valarie Walker is organizing a Juneteenth march of unity, solidarity and love! It’s an occasion to show that people of all races and ethnicities can unite to raise up humanity and overthrow white supremacy— together.
Valarie chose Juneteenth, because it’s a day of celebration marking the end of slavery— a day when we should focus on love and hope—even if daily acts of racist oppression show us how far we are from real Emancipation. But by marching together on Juneteenth in a spirit of love, we’re showing that we’re committed to continuing the work of those like Ruby Bridges that fought before us.
We will be gathering at Brooklyn Bridge Park at 6 p.m., stepping off at 6:30pm, to walk across the bridge. In Manhattan, we’ll stop by the African Burial Ground for a moment of silence, then proceed to City Hall where we’ll have a brief celebration/rally.
This is a masked and social distancing march—measures we take to show our love for each other. We are also committed to nonviolence and sharing a peace/love vibe, but since we can’t control everything, we will have trained marshals on hand who cut their teeth in groups like the Lesbian Avengers and ACT-UP.
We are seeking Marshals to help with this event! Please sign up here to volunteer. If you are not able to Marshal, please join us as a marcher or otherwise spread the word about this event!
