What We Do and How You Can Participate
The NYC Dyke March happens every year on the last Saturday of June (read more about our history here). We are entirely run by self-identified dykes who volunteer anywhere from dozens to hundreds of hours every year to make Dyke March happen, and to support causes that matter to dykes.
The Planning Committee
The Planning Committee meets biweekly in March, and weekly from April to June in order to plan for and organize the annual Dyke March. This includes doing outreach to and training marshals, promoting the action on social media, showing up at events during Pride month to spread the word, planning safety protocols, etc. Usually we have a big debrief and celebration in July to recognize all the hard work we did together.
So you’re interested in joining? Here’s what you can expect. When people join the Dyke March Committee, they typically engage in some of the following:
Attend planning meetings (via Zoom)
Contribute needed skills that may include:
Drafting and posting social media posts;
Designing posters and Instagram images;
Updating the website;
Drafting and sending out emails blasts via SquareSpace;
Organizing events e.g. calling up a venue, recruiting performers/speakers, etc;
Marshaling direct actions and protests;
Doing basic budgeting and tracking Dyke March finances (must have been on the committee for at least a year to be eligible for this role)
Hosting IG live interviews or movie screenings;
And much more! Dyke March is whatever we make it!
Participating in the annual Dyke March and other related actions in any capacity possible
Marshals
Every year, hundreds of dykes volunteer to marshal. Marshals are the backbone of the march. Marshal roles include everything from blocking traffic, keeping the march moving, assisting with wheelchairs, and more! To be a marshal you will need to attend a training. In the summer, we will host a thank you celebration for all our marshals.

Sign up for a wheelchair
Free wheelchairs are available for any duration of the march. Wheelchairs can be pushed by friends, lovers, or one of our superstar accessibility marshals.
