FUND COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

GLITS

G.L.I.T.S, or Gays & Lesbians Living In A Transgender Society, is a grassroots organization dedicated to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community on a global scale. They approach health and rights crises faced by transgender sex workers holistically using harm reduction, human rights principles, economic and social justice, along with a commitment to empowerment and pride in finding solutions from their own community.

 Ali Forney Center

Named for Ali Forney, a Black gay and transgender youth who also used the name Luscious. Forney was a peer counselor of and advocate for homeless LGBTQ youth who was tragically killed on the street in the Harlem. This org’s goal is to protect LGBTQ youths from the harms of homelessness and empower them with the tools needed to live independently.

Educated LIttle Monsters

ELM Performing and Visual Arts Program is a local grassroots movement based in Brooklyn. They are dedicated to providing artistic outlets and economic opportunity for under resourced youth of color while empowering them to become socially responsible leaders who are aware of the challenges affecting them in their communities.

The Door

The Door’s mission is to empower young people to reach their potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. The Door provides a number of services to disconnected youth, including health, mental health, and legal appointments, support for homeless and runaway youth, and HSE and Career and Education classes.

Hetrick-Martin Institute

HMI believes all young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential. HMI creates this environment for LGBTQ youth between the ages of 13 and 24 and their families. Through a comprehensive package of direct services and referrals, Hetrick-Martin seeks to foster healthy youth development.

New Alternatives

New Alternatives increases the self-sufficiency of LGBTQ+ homeless youth and young adults by enabling them to transition out of the shelter system to stable adult lives. They do this by providing long-term support, weekly case management, education services, life skills training, community-building recreational activities, opportunities for self-expression, and programs for HIV+ youth. Their guiding principles are those of harm reduction, youth development, and empowerment.
